adulting
/ˈadʌltɪŋ,əˈdʌltɪŋ/noun INFORMAL
the practice of behaving in a way characteristic of a responsible adult, especially the accomplishment of mundane but necessary tasks.
Do you ever wake up sometimes and just wish you didn't have to deal with the responsibilities of life hoping that someone can take over for the remainder of your time until retirement? Well yeah, me too. As of lately I've been feeling in such a slump. More often than ever I find myself frequently asking "Why was I in such a rush to grow up?" Quite frankly, this adult stuff is for the birds and I want to be five again. (lol) If it's not the bills, it's work, if it's not work it's school, if it's not school it's something else. It seems like the issues are never ending and every time you turn around something else needs to be taken care of. Being an adult and “adulting” is a matter of action and character … not age. Although I'm not much of a veteran in this adulting world, there are a few things that I've learned so far since living on my own. Some of them required me having to be very honest with myself. So how do you manage when you feel like the water is officially at your neck?
1. You are NOT the only one going through shit
I know with adulting, things sometimes feel like it may be the end of the world and you're going through it alone....but everyone's BS is different. Just because it's not your BS doesn't make it any less serious. No matter what stress you are feeling always keep in mind that everyone around you has something they are feeling the same exact way about. The testimony always comes after the hardship. Trust me.
2. Know Your Worth
It may feel like things are hard now, but it's only because you're passionate to become the best and absolute version of yourself. In order to do that, don't forget what you're worth. Never settle for complacency. Know your worth and always add tax! Believe in your passion and your dream and don't let anyone discredit you for that. Things are going to be tough but nothing worth having comes easy. If you aren't happy with something whether it be a job, a relationship, a business decision, etc. never settle for anything short of what you knowingly deserve.
3. Prioritize Your Time
One of the main things pertaining to adulthood is priorities. When it comes to prioritizing things, certain decisions are going to have to be made on your own......and sometimes we don't always want to decide. Keep in mind to prioritize your time by doing whats important. That important thing being you. On your downtime what do you do? Are you always working even on your days off? Take certain time to yourself throughout the day/week to create, write, think, design, inspire, pray, etc. Prioritizing time to yourself really helps to create a clear view and better understanding of things. (TRY IT!)
4. Get Organized
I've noticed one of the main things that keeps me together when it feels like life is falling apart, is my planner. It's super convenient for reminders, dates, times, etc. So whether you have a planner on your phone or a physical copy of one, implementing an organized schedule helps with an organized life. You'll feel so much more at peace when things are together and in order.
5. Whatever You Do.....Don't Stress (too much lol)
I've noticed majority of my stress surfaces from the pressure I put on myself to be great. Yet sometimes a great reminder is knowing not to try to rush the process because everyone around you seems to be doing "pretty good for themselves". Your "come-up" is not a race and is destined to happen right when it needs too. Approach everything at a steady place and it all will come together. Master the art of knowing not the stress the things which you cannot control. If it won't matter in 5 years, don't spend more than 5 minutes stressing about it.
6. It Gets Better But It's All On You
I encourage during the time of your self-discovery and "adulting" that you maintain the ability to never let yourself get in your own way. The only person stopping you from greatness is yourself. You are bigger than you know but the only way to find out is get out of your own way. Stop being your biggest critic/enemy and let all things flow.
Niyah, xo
